Myopia Management App: Q&A

This summarizes how to use the “Myopia Management Report” app for parents, and how to read its screens (takeru-eye.com/myopia-management-app/). Individual judgments about your child’s measurements are given by the doctor at your visit.

Q1. What can this app do?

It records the axial length (the front-to-back length of the eye) measured at each visit and lets you follow the course on a graph. It can do the following.

  • An axial length graph over time, with automatic calculation of how fast it grows per year (progression speed, mm/year)
  • Progression speed is shown in three colors: 🟢🟡🔴
  • Comparison with the standard range (percentile) for children of the same age
  • Explanations of treatment options (orthokeratology, Ryjusea, MiSight®, myopia control glasses, combinations, watchful waiting)
  • Switching between siblings’ records

Q2. What should I enter?

While looking at the printout of test results we give you at each visit, enter the visit date and the axial length (mm) of the right and left eyes in the “Data entry” tab. You can also enter just one eye. Since July 2026, our clinic has used Tomey’s “OA-1” to measure axial length.

Q3. I made a mistake entering data. Can I fix it?

Tap the row for the visit under “Visit records” in the “Report” tab, and you can correct or delete the axial length for that visit. If you entered a record twice for the same day, please delete it from here as well.

Q4. What do 🟢🟡🔴 mean?

They compare how many mm per year the axial length is growing (progression speed) with the guide we use at visits. The guide is slightly different for children who are not yet being treated and those already being treated.

Not yet treatedUnder treatment
🟢Under 0.20 mm/yearUnder 0.22 mm/year
🟡0.20–0.29 mm/year0.22–0.31 mm/year
🔴0.30 mm/year or more0.32 mm/year or more

The colors are meant to make the guide at visits easy to understand, and are not a diagnosis. The 🔴 line is a guide for how our clinic operates. More than the number itself, we look at whether the speed of growth has slowed compared with before treatment started. A single measurement can sometimes come out fast by chance. Judgments are made at the exam.

Q5. 🟡 or 🔴 appeared. What should I do?

Please do not change or stop treatment based only on what the app shows; tell the doctor at your next visit. If the interval between visits is short, or if it spans the time when the measuring device changed, the speed may come out larger. Individual judgments about your child’s numbers are made at the exam.

Q6. How should I read the percentile?

It is a guide to where a child falls when 100 children of the same age and sex are lined up from the shortest axial length to the longest. P50 is exactly in the middle.

The percentiles in this app are based on the standard curves of BHVI (Brien Holden Vision Institute; Donovan 2012, a multinational cohort study). The OA-1 graph we show in the exam room, on the other hand, uses percentile curves for Japanese children (ages 4–15) (based on the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology’s survey of myopia among students and the COY-NEXT study led by Tohoku University). Because the underlying data differ, the same measurement may appear in a slightly different position. Please treat both as reference values.

Q7. There is a small step in the graph.

Our clinic switched its axial length measuring device to the OA-1 in July 2026. When the measuring device changes, the measured value can shift very slightly even when measuring the same eye. For that reason, on the graph of a child we have been recording since before then, the line may show a small step around the time of the switch. The step is due to “the device changed,” not to “the eye suddenly changed.” We record the time of the switch and subtract the step to see whether the speed of growth itself has changed.

→ Looking at myopia progression as “speed”: introducing the OA-1 axial length measurement device

Q8. How often should we visit?

For myopia management, we ask for a regular visit every 3 months. We measure axial length and check the treatment effect.

Q9. Where is the data stored?

The data you enter is stored only inside your own phone (browser). It is not sent to our server. For that reason, records can be lost when you change phones or clear browser data. In Safari on iPhone, data saved by a site you have not opened for a while may be deleted automatically.

Q10. How do I back up and move to a new phone?

  1. If you tap “Save backup file” at the bottom of the app, a file is saved to your phone (in “Files” or “Downloads”). You can also use “Copy as text” and save it in a notes app or similar.
  2. Open the app on the new phone and load the file with “Restore from file” in the “Data entry” tab. For text, paste it into the “Import from backup” box to restore.

We recommend saving a backup regularly, for example after every visit.

Q11. Can I add it to my home screen?

Yes. You can open it quickly, and on iPhone the data is also less likely to be deleted.

  • iPhone (Safari): the Share button at the bottom of the screen (a square with an up arrow) → “Add to Home Screen”
  • Android (Chrome): the ︙ menu at the top right → “Add to Home Screen”

The app opened from the home screen and the app opened from a browser such as Safari may store data separately. Please always open it the same way.

Q12. The screen seems out of date.

The app may be updated for improvements. Please reload the page. On iPhone, press and hold the reload button in the address bar and choose “Reload without cache.” Reloading does not delete your saved data.

Q13. I want to know more about the treatments.

Explanations of each treatment are in the app’s “Treatment programs and information.” For costs, target ages, and so on, see the comparison table of treatment options. We decide together at the exam which treatment suits your child, asking about the speed of progression, age, lifestyle, and your family’s thinking.
