Contact Lenses

[Contact Lens Wear Safely Managed by an Ophthalmologist]

○ Under Japan’s Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Act (formerly the Pharmaceutical Affairs Act), contact lenses are classified as
Class III in the category of highly controlled medical devices (which also includes pacemakers, ventilators, dialyzers, balloon catheters, and stents).

○ They are worn directly on the eye (the cornea), and incorrect use can cause serious eye disorders such as corneal ulcers and keratitis.

○ To keep your precious eyes healthy, we examine you as an ophthalmologist, ask about your wishes, and then dispense suitable contact lenses at the clinic (on the same day or a later day). We then follow your eyes carefully.

○ Keratoconuscontact lens prescriptions are provided.

○ For the safety of your eyes,we do not issue contact lens prescriptions on their own.
(We are not an eye clinic affiliated with a contact lens shop.)

[Contact Lens Examination]

  • Corneal endothelial cell count (specular microscope)
  • Stability of the tear film: “dry eye”
  • State of the corneal epithelium (presence of scratches)
  • Presence of conjunctivitis caused by contact lenses
  • Signs of oxygen deprivation of the eye: “corneal pannus”
  • Eye strain and presbyopia:checking the cause
  • For people with strong myopia:early detection of glaucoma and retinal disease and so on

* We do not have a contact lens shop on the premises.
* If an eye abnormality is found or suspected, the contact lenses may be dispensed on a different day.

* If you want contact lenses for the first time (you have never worn them), please come about 2 hours before the end of reception hours.
: Testing, examination, and practice wearing take a fair amount of time (sometimes spread over several visits).

* After the examination, we can ship contact lenses you choose to buy to your home (at the manufacturer’s shipping rate).

* KeratoconusIf you are diagnosed with keratoconus, we prescribe suitable hard contact lenses as needed after an appointment.

* For safety, we do not prescribe first contact lenses to elementary school children.
(This is because of dangers such asnapping with contact lenses in, and so on.)
 Sports glasses are the safest.
In soccer, glasses are permitted under the FIFA rules for the World Cup.

Wearing contact lenses [explained in videos]

» Proper Care and Use of Contact Lenses

Short videos from the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO):

A summary of each video follows.

The danger of “contacts you can buy right away”[34-second video]

・You can buy contacts at variety shops, drugstores, and even drive-throughs.

・With or without a prescription, they are super easy to get and make you look good (Cool, right?)

・But this can happen:

(Four images of corneal damage caused by contact lenses)

・Even if your vision is perfectly fine, always have an eye exam at an eye doctor’s office when you buy contacts.

(1) Replace your case every 3 months.

(2) Keep the case that holds contact lens solution clean.

(3) Always disinfect lenses you use only occasionally.

(4) Do not rinse contact lenses with tap water.

(5) Do not wear contact lenses in the pool, hot spring, bath, or sauna. Tap water contains microorganisms. Microorganisms attached to lenses can cause serious infections.

(6) Always take out your contact lenses before going to sleep.

(7) Wear glasses from time to time to give your eyes oxygen.

(8) Even if they feel comfortable, follow the replacement schedule.

8 steps to protect your eyes from contact lens infection[64-second video]

・One in ten Americans uses contact lenses (CL).

・Regular contacts and colored contacts, with or without a prescription, are all medical devices and must be used carefully under a doctor’s prescription.

・Incorrect use can cause serious infections and leave lasting vision impairment.

・If you notice anything abnormal, even slightly, see an eye doctor right away.
