[Glaucoma and Retina Care That Avoids Surgery Whenever Possible]
○ There are mainly two kinds of lasers used in ophthalmology.
The “argon laser” (photocoagulation): retinal diseases
The “YAG laser” (shock waves): glaucoma and posterior capsule opacification
Think of it as “shaking” the tissue
○ We can treat retinal disease, glaucoma, and posterior capsule opacification.
○ All are done as outpatient procedures (covered by insurance / same-day).
○ Retinal disease
Laser photocoagulation (retinal photocoagulation)
Diabetic retinopathy, retinal tear, retinal detachment, branch retinal vein occlusion, central retinal vein occlusion, and so on
It is considered when the above diagnosis is made after a fundus examination.
○ Glaucoma and ocular hypertension
SLT, selective laser trabeculoplasty
It is considered for people diagnosed with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension who are being followed as outpatients.
This is a treatment using a low-energy YAG laser.
○ Posterior capsule opacification
YAG capsulotomy
It is considered for people diagnosed with posterior capsule opacification, a loss of vision after cataract surgery.
