◯ Myopia occurs when the axial length (the length of the eyeball from front to back) grows as a child develops.
The front-to-back length (axial length) of the eyeball averages 2.4 cm.
◯ With “high myopia” of −6 D or more, there is a risk of “pathologic myopia,” in which retinal diseases such as myopic choroidal neovascularization and retinal detachment can cause blindness.
The details of the cause are not known, but the main factor is thought to be the retina being stretched as the axial length grows.
◯ It is also important as a risk factor for glaucoma.
✔ If you are highly myopic, it is important to understand the condition of your eyes early and follow them over time.
