I attended the low vision seminar for physicians who certify assistive devices for people with visual impairment, held at the National Rehabilitation Center for Persons with Disabilities in Tokorozawa, Saitama Prefecture (near Kumagaya). About 60 ophthalmologists from all over Japan gathered for the training, which centered on hands-on practice, including experiencing visual impairment ourselves. We learned about the many conditions that cause visual impairment, such as glaucoma, retinitis pigmentosa, diabetic retinopathy, retinopathy of prematurity, macular degeneration, chorioretinal atrophy, optic atrophy, corneal opacity, the after-effects of stroke, and high myopia, and about the low vision care mindset. I am grateful to everyone who taught us over the three days. I hope to broaden the range of care I can offer in my practice.
