日に数名の患者さんに対して、英語診療をしています。
長崎県佐世保市・山口県岩国市在住アメリカ人の診療も担当しています。
ボストンに住んでいたころ、
「病気をしたとき・健康が気になったときに、日本語で伝えたいことが話せなかったら不安かもしれない」
Japanese speakerを検索していました。
日本語を話せる医師は、ほとんどいませんでした。
逆に日本で英語を話せる医師がいたら、日本に住む外国人は安心して話せるだろうなと思っていました。
アメリカでは仕事・音楽の交流もあり、英語が話せるようになりました。
帰国後の九大病院外来でも、英語診療の機会を度々いただきました。
説明も含めて、英語診療に慣れました。
英語を話すのは、医師ひとりだけです。
通訳の方を連れて来なくてもokです。
医療事務・視能訓練士のスタッフは英語を話さなくても良いように、工夫をしています。

英語を話す方のお役に立てることも、嬉しく思っています。
We provide English-language medical care for several patients each day.
I also offer medical care to Americans living in Sasebo City (Nagasaki Prefecture) and Iwakuni City (Yamaguchi Prefecture).
When I was living in Boston, I looked for Japanese-speaking doctors because I thought:
“If you get sick or have health concerns and can’t communicate in Japanese, you might feel uneasy.”
However, there were very few doctors who could speak Japanese.
On the other hand, I realized that if there were English-speaking doctors in Japan, foreigners living here would feel more at ease when seeking medical care.
In the U.S., I improved my English through both work and music.
After returning to Japan, I had several opportunities to provide English-language medical care at the outpatient department of Kyushu University Hospital.
These experiences made me comfortable conducting medical consultations in English, including detailed explanations.
At our clinic, only the doctor Takeru speaks English.
It is not necessary to bring an interpreter.
To ensure smooth communication, we have implemented the following measures so that our medical office and orthoptist staff do not need to speak English:
• English medical questionnaire
• Translation apps/tools for iPad, iPhone, and Mac
• If the explanation of an examination is difficult to understand, the doctor will clarify it as needed
