High Myopia / Japan-China-Korea Ophthalmology Meeting

The length from the front to the back of the eyeball (axial length) averages 2.4 cm, and myopia develops as the axial length grows with age. When myopia progresses to a state of “high myopia” of −6 D or more, there is a risk of “pathologic myopia,” which can cause retinal diseases such as myopic choroidal neovascularization and retinal detachment and lead to blindness. The details of the cause are not known, but the main cause is thought to be that the retina is pulled as the axial length grows.

Myopia is also important as arisk factor for glaucoma.

It is important for people with high myopia to understand the state of their eyes early and to be followed over time.

At Takeru Eye Clinic, we usevarious devicesas needed and explain by showing images in the examination room.

Yesterday and today I attended theJapan-China-Korea Ophthalmology Joint Meeting, held over two days at the Kyushu University Alumni Association Hall.

Before I went abroad in 2007, I worked together with Dr. Sonoda of Kyushu University on his assigned reportstudy. It was an enjoyable time to meet again Dr. Young Joon Cho of Korea (now a professor at Chungnam National University), Dr. Han Zhang of China (now a professor at China Medical University), and colleagues connected through Boston.
