Eye Surgery During the COVID-19 Pandemic

The Japanese Ophthalmological Society, the Japan Ophthalmologists Association, and the Japanese Society for Ocular Infections have published their thinking on eye surgery at this time, and I would like to share it.

○ With the number of coronavirus infections rising rapidly, the chance of encountering undiagnosed or asymptomatic patients is increasing in every region.

○ Surgery that touches the nasopharynx (such as lacrimal duct surgery) carries a high risk of spreading the virus.

○ Conditions considered highly urgent are retinal detachment, rapidly worsening glaucoma, eye trauma, cataracts that deteriorate quickly or cause complications (such as intumescent cataract), infectious diseases such as endophthalmitis, malignant diseases such as retinoblastoma, and corneal transplantation.

○ For ordinary adult cataract surgery, please consider the possibility of postponement.

○ At pre- and postoperative exams, please consider keeping enough distance between waiting patients in outpatient waiting areas and inner waiting rooms.

At Kyushu University Hospital and other core hospitals, surgery other than for malignant or highly urgent diseases also appears to have been postponed.

* As of April 9, decisions differ from hospital to hospital.

There are also several patients we have referred to these hospitals.

If you have any concerns, please contact us at any time.

Thank you.
