Fourth Anniversary of Opening: Continuing High-Quality Care in the Takatori Shopping Street

I left immunology research, my years in Boston, and university work, and in 2018 began my present work in the Takatori shopping street.
It is a very simple kind of practice: thinking only about the patient.

I enjoy studying to gather information from around the world in English, and I still continue to do so.
I keep writing the knowledge I gain, as clearly as I can, on thewebsite

I update my self-made websiteoften, including small details.
I also enjoy studying design, and I work to make diagrams easy to understand.

  • “I don’t know what is happening in my eye, or why.”
  • “I am anxious about when my eye inflammation (uveitis, iritis, scleritis) will recur.”
  • “I came to Japan to study or work and cannot speak Japanese well (an examination in English).”
  • “Which eye clinic is easy for children to visit?”
  • “When is the right time for eye surgery?” and more.

My days are filled with talking at length with patients.
I explain using images.

I hope to reduce yourworries as much as possible.
Please keep asking questions until nothing is left unclear.

With the help of so many people, we will soon mark our fourth anniversary.
Each of the staff who work with me has wonderful abilities of their own.

Thank you so much, always.

Introducing new equipment

New ophthalmic equipment has been introduced, and it broadens the range of our care.

From last year’s text:

たける眼科の医療機器導入の年表:2018年10月開院時のアコモレフ(調節機能解析装置)から、角膜内皮細胞測定装置、角膜形状解析装置、YAGレーザー、スポットビジョンスクリーナー、中心フリッカー値測定器、大型弱視鏡、2021年8月の超広角眼底撮影装置まで

“Ophthalmic care other than surgery”
We can now provide full care for glaucoma, the retina, uveitis, strabismus, amblyopia, keratoconus, and more.

The times have changed.
We can now use in practice equipment that overturns what used to be common sense.
Since last year, when we were able to introduce「Mirante」the flow of our care has truly changed.

To explain this equipment to patients and use it appropriately, it is very important for medical staff to keep their knowledge up to date.
We write about new equipment in particular on the website.

About myopia in children:
Research around the world has advanced, and we have reached an era when we can talk about safe ways to slow myopia progression.

“Pyramid of levels of evidence” and scientific evidence:

OrthokeratologyThree and a half years after starting treatment, the number of people who can now see without glasses has truly grown.
At first I proceeded with treatment while asking questions of a doctor in Kyoto. Thank you.

By now we, too, have accumulated experience.
We can now respond appropriately to various eye shapes (corneal shapes).

As an indicator of myopia progression in children (myopia progression prediction),
the change in the length of the eye, the “axial length,” is important:
Now that we can use the new equipment, data will accumulate from here.

About eye clinic appointments

Since we opened,we introduced an IT-based appointment systemon a trial basis.
Unlike other industries, eye care did not seem to fit well with appointment-based care.
I have written down the reasons:

Except for some kinds of care, appointments are not particularly necessary.

There are tendencies for busy times and quieter times.
Please refer to the current waiting time and come directly to the clinic.
(The appointment system continues to operate as before.)

The online medical questionnaire, where you can write in advance what you want to tell us,is very convenient.
For everyone who comes to us for help, we all work as hard as we can.

Orthoptistsnow number three full-time, and the efficiency of our care has improved.
We keep refining ourselves so that high-quality eye tests can be done at any time.

To grasp the current state of your eyes, several visits are sometimes needed.

For the following, we ask you to make an appointment by phone.
Or,LINEcontact us from here.
• Orthokeratology fitting examination
• Visual field test
• Visual acuity test for children under elementary school age

Orthoptist trainees

Teaching students is one of the things I want to continue.
Influenced by Dr. Sonoda of Kyushu University (now a professor), I somehow wanted to be able to supervise graduate students toward their degrees (a medical doctorate).

After returning to Japan, I actually took charge of Japanese and Chinese graduate students.
All of these junior colleagues were excellent and earned their degrees with little relation to my guidance.

Next, a story about how I unexpectedly came to have an opportunity to teach students:

The Fukuoka International University of Health and Welfare is nearby.
It is in Momochihama, next to Fukuoka Sanno Hospital.

Having been a vocational school, the orthoptist departmentbecame a university in 2020.

By happenstance, from September 2021 we began accepting orthoptist trainees.
Our orthoptists on staff are in charge of instruction in actual examination techniques.

Students also ask me questions, such as explanations of diseases.

Student training is a good opportunity for us too. Thank you.
Because we are close, the faculty members also come to talk with us.

An orthoptistis an expert in eye examinations who holds a national qualification.
It is an important profession, earned through great effort, and valued and active in ophthalmic care.

There must be many doubts and anxieties in pursuing a medical specialty.
Please feel free to contact us at any time.

Takatori shopping street: in the community

I have become quite familiar with the Takatori area.
I do not drive, so I am always on foot.
Thank you to everyone who tells me they saw me around.

This year the “Sazae-san Festival” returned.
I am involved with the shopping street, though only a little.

I hope we can continue concerts that children will enjoy, in summer and winter.
Wonderful musicians active in many places play together with us.

“Takatori Family Concert”
The next one is planned for December.
At the restaurant “Biowarun” across the street.
Thank you.
