I was once asked to name just one subspecialty (an area of expertise within ophthalmology).
Dr. Ide of Asagaya, Tokyo, asked me, and I answered.
“Uveitis.”
When I graduated from Nagasaki University, I chose ophthalmology as my specialty,
and during my ophthalmology residency I decided to study uveitis, so I went on to graduate school in immunology, and from there to Boston.

I think it is fine to call one’s area of strength within ophthalmology a “subspecialty.”
Studying immunology first allowed me to reach information that is both broad and deep.
The papers I consult in English are information from all over the world.
I believe that, having deepened my knowledge of immunology, I became able to extend my knowledge across many fields.
There are things about the cornea, glaucoma, and the retina that I can understand and make sense of from the standpoint of immunology.
Since deciding to open the clinic, I have studied myopia and amblyopia in particular.
I am very bad at studying by memorization, but I enjoy very much studying that broadens my knowledge.
I continue to write up the results as clearly as possible in the blog section of the website.
I have also started audio explanations (currently in Japanese).
I hope to be useful to patients in the local community and to those who find me by searching from afar.
Now that I have opened my clinic in the Takatori shopping street,
besides uveitis,
glaucoma, children’s eyes, the retina, and ciliary muscle dysfunction
are the main focus of my daily practice.
I entered medical school because I wanted to be a “pediatrician.”
In the Kyushu University department, for some reason I became absorbed in research.
I have been given many wonderful experiences, and I am grateful.
Now I can see many children, as well as patients up to their 90s.
I am very happy to be doing this work every day.
Thank you always to everyone who has looked after me.
I look forward to your continued support.

An overview of uveitis treatment is summarized in the following article.
